Overview

Problem

As a consequence of COVID-19, grandparents and new born grandchildren do not have a chance to meet or bond in the first stages of the baby’s life. Due to the elderly’s digital divide, grandparents often find it difficult to facetime or zoom call, leading to little time spent with the baby, and no emotional connection formed. For many, this has taken a huge toll.

This was a week long project created as a response to a brief set by panasonic - "Imagine how we can resolve the issues we are currently facing with healthy relationships; whether that’s maintaining existing, creating new or reigniting old"

Key Relationship Insights

The pandemic has caused many issues, but one of the biggest, is the growing epidemic of loneliness, especially with one of the hardest hit groups, the elderly.

It’s been found that during the wake of the pandemic, 1 in 3 elderly people have become significantly more lonely. Grandparents often live in a world of shrinking circles, as their peers and older relatives die, move away or suffer from serious health issues, often leaving large spaces for grandchildren to become a larger space in their lives. COVID-19 has robbed grandparents of many things, but that special bonding with a new born grandchild has, for almost all, been stolen away by the pandemic, leaving them with an agonizing and lonely wait.[1]

Concept Generation

Image not found

Restrictions were placed on this project due to COVID, these restrictions prohibited group work, or any primary research, so all research and ideation had to be done alone, and could not contain any conversations with users.

Concept Generation

Initial concept generation began by looking into how this relationship is affected, and what individual users are affected. This was then broken down and expanded on, so each group was explored, and fleshed out.

Issues

I collated and ranked issues I thought were found to be the worse based on secondary research. These problems informed a basic persona, which highlighted the thoughts, feelings and actions of the end user.

Existing Products

Exploration at this point also went into potential product styling, and examples of existing products which were similar in components, I also looked into the pit falls of these products.

Concept Generation

Quick concept sketches were generated into the physical form the device would take on, and how the internals would work. Due to the project being only a week long, a direction was choosen fairly quickly to allow time for the rest of the tasks.

Solution

Ibsen - two part device

Ibsen is a solution which will helps improve the relationship for grandparents and new born grandchildren by providing a unique bonding experience. Ibsen will help the relationship between grandparents and new born grandkids by;

- Providing a unique reminder of the new born baby as a ambience presence in the grandparents life.

- The abstraction of emotions and personality allows the grandparents to start building up a connection with the baby, and get an understanding of it’s personality.

- The device is easily paired and setup by the parents, preventing the grandparents from having to struggle with difficult technology.

- A passive system for both parties enables an easy use, reducing stress felt by any party.

Abstraction

Activity

The business of the abstraction will change based on the baby’s movement, a sleeping new born will produce a calm, empty wave form, but a lively moving new born will create a busy abstraction.

Colour

The abstraction will change colour based on the mood of the baby, for example, if the new born is crying, it will turn red but if it is laughing, it will turn green.

Visualisation

Based on these two factors, and several others, the mood and personality of the new born can start to shine through. The left represents a calm, quiet baby, while the right represents a noisy, unhappy baby.

Design inspiration

Very few animals in nature exhibit the grandparent and grandchild
relationship, one of the only nonhuman animal species to exhibit such trait is the killer whale, which is known for grandparents to raise grandchildren, and be the leader of the pack. [1] This makes the killer whale an appropriate choice for design inspiration, it also helps to bring a more playful and friendly aspect to the design, making it more suitable for children.

There are two key identifiable features found on all killer whales, the fins, and the white mark on the side of it’s head. The fins are used to break up the revolved form, and helps prevent the device from just looking like a security camera.
